두 개의 상자(Two Boxes)

저에게는 두 개의 상자가 있습니다.

하느님께서 주신 것은 어떤 것일까요?

하느님이 말씀하셨습니다.

"모든 슬픔일랑 검은 상자에 넣고

기쁨일랑 금으로 된 상자에 넣어라."

나는 그 말씀에 귀기울이며

두 개의 상자에 저의 기쁨과 슬픔을 모두 집어넣었습니다.

금 상자는 날이 갈수록 점점 무거워졌는데

검은 상자는 예전과 다름없이 가볍기만 했습니다.

저는 이상하게 여기며 검은 상자를 열어보았습니다.

그 이유를 알고 싶었지요.

검은 상자 밑바닥에 구멍이 나 있는 것을 보았습니다.

그 구멍으로 슬픔이 모두 빠져나간 것입니다.

저는 하느님께 그 구멍을 보여드리며 곰곰이 생각했습니다.

"제 슬픔이 모두 어디로 갔을까 궁금했어요."

"얘야, 슬픔은 모두 나와 함께 있단다."

나는 하느님께 왜 두 개의 상자,

곧 금 상자와 구멍난 검은 상자를 주셨냐고 물었습니다

..

"얘야, 금 상자는 네가 받은 축복을 헤아리라고 주었고

검은 상자는 슬픔일랑 흘러보내라고 준 것이란다."

I have in my hands two boxes,

Which God gave me to hold?

He said, "Put all your sorrows in the black box,

And all your joys in the gold."

I heeded His words, and in the two boxes,

Both my joys and sorrows I stored,

But though the gold became heavier each day,

The black was as light as before.

With curiosity, I opened the black,

I wanted to find out why,

And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole,

Which my sorrows had fallen out by.

I showed the hole to God, and mused,

"I wonder where my sorrows could be!"

He smiled a gentle smile and said,

"My child, they're all here with me."

I asked God, why He gave me the boxes,

Why the gold and the black with the hole?

"My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings,

The black is for you to let go."

+ We should consider all of our friends a blessing.
